How long does it take?
|
This depends on the extent of the document, but as a rule of thumb we can index a minimum of 200 pages, or the electronic equivalent, per indexer per week. We can accommodate urgent requests as we have a team of experienced indexers in-house, who can collaborate on indexing the same title. |
How is quality controlled?
|
A rigorous Quality Assurance Programme ensures that all work is to the highest standard of BS ISO 999 and to Society of Indexers guidelines. All work is checked by a second indexer before delivery. |
How is the index delivered?
|
Indexes are normally delivered by email as RTF files, but they can be provided in any format e.g. .xls (Microsoft Excel) files, .tab files, .txt files. |
What we will need from you
|
All we need is a set of proofs (hardcopy and/or PDFs), or access to the electronic text, your style sheet or a list of your requirements. We do the rest!

Our rates are competitive, and are based on the complexity and time-scale for the project. We acknowledge the suggested rates from the Society of Indexers:
“As from 1 April 2007, the Society recommends that indexing rates start from …. approximately £2.00 a page for an index to a straightforward text.”
We are happy to charge by the hour, by the page, or by the project/task.
Factors affecting the rate include:
-
complexity of text, which needs a detailed understanding of the subject matter
-
detailed indexing of text (e.g. more than 8 index entries per page)
-
detailed indexing of figures and tables
-
need for consultation of reference sources
-
dummy paginated proofs
-
late amendments to proofs
-
proofs of poor quality
-
proofs of large-size, or awkward size or format
-
pressure to produce an index in a very short time
-
requirement to consult author
Terms and conditions are supplied with the estimate.
