Company History
 |
Merrall-Ross International (MRI) was established originally as a partnership in 1987, by Janine Ross (a Fellow of the Society of Indexers), and was incorporated in 1997. Janine had, in fact, started indexing as a sole trader some years before that, but as the demand for her work grew she clearly needed to expand the business, and train other indexers.
MRI is based in brand-new state-of-the-art offices on the North Wales Business Park in the small town of Abergele. The North Wales Business Park is a new technology park supported by the Welsh Assembly and which will connected to the FibreSpeed optical fibre network for Wales. The company has grown considerably, and now has a team of experienced science graduates and postgraduates providing award-winning indexes. In addition, we work with a team of freelance colleagues who provide indexing services in non-medical fields. |
|
In 2004, MRI was selected as a full partner of a 3.5 year EU Network of Excellence (Framework 6) on Semantic Mining. We were the only commercial company chosen from the UK. The full title of the consortium was Semantic Interoperability and Data Mining in Biomedicine (NOE 507505) (www.semanticmining.org). The consortium covered the following areas:
- SNOMED CT
- Text mining and information retrieval
- Semantic web
- Multilingual medical dictionary
- Ontology engineering
This venture highlighted our international reputation for quality, and provided evidence for the breadth of the information retrieval services we can offer.
In 2006 a new office was opened in North Wales, under the associated company, Merrall-Ross (Wales) Ltd. This extends our indexing and information retrieval skills to websites, integration linking of textbooks, thesaurus development and medical coding.
Our plans for 2008 include further developments and expansion into new fields. Watch this space!
